Flat Cocktails Hit 38% of New Alcohol Launches

Big alcohol finally cracked the code on what Gen Z wants — and it's flat, not fizzy. Noncarbonated drinks swallowed up 38% of new premixed alcohol launches last year, up from 27% in 2021, as hard teas and vodka waters replace seltzers at bars. That pivot is already deciding which brewers and distillers ride alcohol’s only growth pocket.

  • While the industry shrinks, ready-to-drink cocktail sales are surging — up 32% this year, even as hard seltzers’ share sinks nearly 4%.
  • For example, the rapid growth of Sun Cruiser is carrying Boston Beer — masking softer demand for its Truly and Dogfish Head brands.

One last party: Boston Beer isn’t alone chasing the flat crowd. Gallo’s newly launched Lucky One Lemonade moved a million cases in its first seven months, beating the pace of the original High Noon. But that momentum masks industry-wide fatigue, as sits down by over 10% this year while alcohol names broadly trade like they’re bracing for structural decline. The pivot toward flat might be the industry’s clearest growth lever, but so far it’s cushioning the decline more than ending it.
