United Is Offering Delta and American Flyers Elite Status. Here's How to Qualify

United Airlines wants to steal some of its rivals' most loyal customers, and it's offering elite status to get their attention. The airline has launched a limited-time promotion for Delta and American Airlines frequent flyers, with faster inflight Wi-Fi at the center of its pitch.

The offer gives eligible travelers 90 days of United MileagePlus status. But keeping those benefits beyond the trial means meeting a spending requirement, so there's more to consider than the initial perks.

Who qualifies for the offer?

United is matching Delta and American elite members to corresponding MileagePlus tiers for 90 days. Registration is open through Oct. 15, with applications closing at 11:59 p.m. CT.

The airline says applicants should receive a decision within three business days.

United is also waiving its usual three-year restriction on status matches. Under this promotion, travelers can qualify for extended status by meeting spending requirements during the trial.

There's one important limitation. Applicants must be US residents who currently hold elite status with Delta or American.

How much do you need to spend?

The initial 90-day match is only the beginning. To keep their United status through Jan. 31, 2028, travelers must meet a spending threshold on United flights during the trial.

Entry-level tiers require $1.5K in spending, with qualifying thresholds varying depending on the MileagePlus tier being matched.

That makes the promotion more appealing to travelers who already have United flights planned. If those bookings count toward the requirement, they could help secure longer-term elite benefits without a major change in travel plans.

But for someone who flies Delta or American almost exclusively, switching airlines just to qualify could mean spending more than the benefits are worth. It's worth checking the MileagePlus requirements against upcoming trips before committing.

Why United is betting on faster Wi-Fi

The campaign is called Switch to Better Wi-Fi, and United isn't hiding which airlines it's targeting.

The carrier is rolling out SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet across its fleet. A leaked installation plan suggests more than 1K mainline aircraft could have the service by May 2027.

Meeting that target would require upgrading more than 20 aircraft per week across 17 maintenance stations.

Meanwhile, Delta has chosen Amazon's Project Kuiper, with installations expected to begin in 2028. American plans to start its own Starlink rollout next year.

United is hoping that getting faster connectivity onto its planes sooner will convince frequent flyers to give the airline a chance.

The promotion is already drawing interest. A United spokesperson said applications received in just two days were equivalent to eight typical status match campaigns.

It's also an unusually direct challenge to competitors, with industry analysts pointing out how rarely airlines name their rivals so openly.

Should you make the switch?

United's regular status match program remains available to eligible elite members of other airlines. This promotion gives Delta and American customers a separate opportunity with different requirements.

For travelers, the decision comes down to upcoming flights. Someone who already expects to spend $1.5K or more on United may find the entry-level match worth pursuing.

But if qualifying means moving bookings away from an airline where you already enjoy elite benefits, the decision deserves more thought.

With registration closing Oct. 15, eligible travelers have a limited window to consider the offer. The best reason to participate is having United flights on the calendar, not spending extra money just to earn another airline's status.
