Drivers Have More Ways to Save on Gas Than Ever. Here's Which Ones Are Worth Using

Gas prices are easing, but filling up is still relatively expensive this holiday weekend. AAA puts the national average at ~$3.84, marking the highest Fourth of July average in four years. Until prices fall further, a handful of programs can reduce what you spend every time you fill up.
Several chains are running promotions that directly cut per-gallon costs.
Amazon Prime members can get 50 cents off per gallon at more than 7.5K participating gas stations, including bp, Amoco, ampm, and Thorntons locations, through July 5.
To claim it, link your Prime account to earnify, bp’s free gas rewards app, then use your phone number or linked payment method at the pump. After the promotion ends, the standard discount drops to 10 cents per gallon.
7-Eleven is running a parallel deal with a longer runway. If you text ALLIN to 711711, you’ll get 50 cents off per gallon on the 7th and 11th of every month through July 11, 2026. New members who text SAVE to the same number get 25 cents off per gallon on their next three fills, with no membership fee.
One-time promotions help, but layering a rewards program with the right credit card stretches savings further.
Kroger's 4X Fuel Points promotion runs through July 24. On Fridays, shoppers who clip the digital coupon can earn four Fuel Points for every dollar spent on qualifying grocery purchases. Every 100 points can be redeemed for 10 cents off per gallon, up to $1 off per fill. Registration is free through the Kroger app or website.
For ongoing per-gallon discounts at Shell, the Shell Fuel Rewards program gives new members 10 cents off their first fill, 20 cents off their second, and 30 cents off their third. After that, the default Silver tier saves 3 cents per gallon, with Gold and Platinum tiers at 5 and 10 cents.
Credit cards add another layer. The Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express earns 3% cash back at eligible US gas stations, with a $95 annual fee after the first year. The Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express earns the same 3% at US gas stations with no annual fee, capped at $6K in eligible purchases per year.
Wholesale club cards go higher. The Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi earns 5% cash back on Costco gas. The Sam’s Club Mastercard earns 5% back in Sam’s Cash on gas, capped at $6K per year.
Free apps like GasBuddy can also help drivers compare nearby gas prices before filling up, with extra perks available for users who submit fuel receipts.
The decline in gas prices has been faster than the drop seen in 2022, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
“Maybe if everything goes well, gas prices could be in the low to mid $3 range by the time that Labor Day rolls around,” De Haan said.
Oil prices have pulled back after the US and Iran reached an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which had been a driver of elevated prices.
Americans are spending roughly $300M less on gasoline each day than they were about 40 days ago. Even so, prices remain about 67 cents higher per gallon than a year ago, which means the programs above are worth activating now rather than waiting for further relief at the pump.
