Wells Fargo Offers $2.5K Bonus for Large Deposit Transfers

Wells Fargo is paying a $2,500 bonus to customers who open or upgrade to a Premier Checking account and move $250K in new money to the bank.

The elevated offer runs through Nov. 9, after which a standard $2K version takes over until Jan. 13, 2027.

Note

  • Premier offers require $250K in new linked deposits or investments by day 45, held through day 90.

The mechanics are the same for both. Customers get a bonus offer code by email, bring it to a branch, and open Premier Checking with a $25 minimum deposit or upgrade an existing checking account.

From there, $250K or more in new deposits must reach qualifying linked accounts by day 45 and stay at or above that level through day 90.

The bonus lands in the Premier Checking account within 30 days of the requirements being met, and it counts as taxable income.

Qualifying balances aren't limited to cash. Checking, savings, certificates of deposit, FDIC-insured individual retirement accounts, and investment balances held through Wells Fargo Advisors all count, so money already invested elsewhere can satisfy the $250K requirement instead of sitting in cash.

Premier Checking itself pays 0.01% annual percentage yield, so parking a quarter of a million dollars in the checking account earns next to nothing. A $250K linked balance does waive the account's $35 monthly service fee.

Doctor of Credit puts the cash version at roughly a 6% return for the two months the money is committed.

There's also a stacking angle, with Doctor of Credit suggesting you open an ordinary Wells Fargo checking account online first for a $325 bonus with a $1K direct deposit, then upgrade to Premier at a branch once that posts.

Timing is the risk, since Wells Fargo bonuses take a full 90 days to post and the $2.5K window closes first.

Bank bonus churning has its own primer, and the bank account bonus market has its own scorecard.

Banks are paying up to keep deposits

Wells Fargo's net interest margin on a taxable basis slipped to 2.43% in the third quarter from 2.61% a year earlier, a sign of how much lenders are paying for funding.

Treasury yields climbed during the quarter, pushing customers toward better returns and forcing banks to raise deposit rates to stop outflows.

JPMorgan saw its deposit margin fall to 2.78% from 2.79% over the same stretch.

The deposits are still arriving. Wells Fargo reported average deposits up 10.7% and average loans up 11%, helped by its consumer banking unit. Citigroup posted an 11% rise in average deposits and a 12% jump in average loans.

The fine print worth reading

Anyone who received a Premier Checking bonus in the past 12 months is ineligible, as are Wells Fargo employees.

The code only works in a branch, and the $2K offer carries identical deposit terms with a longer runway.

For a bank fighting to hold onto funding, $2.5K buys 90 days of a quarter-million-dollar relationship.
