United Is Dropping Its Flight-Based Status Shortcut. Here's How to Avoid Paying More

Flying frequently won't be enough to earn United Airlines elite status under its new MileagePlus rules. Starting with the 2027 earning year, the airline is eliminating its flight-count qualification option, leaving spending as the main path to status. For travelers chasing Premier 1K, that could mean thousands more in qualifying purchases.

How much status will cost

United is eliminating Premier Qualifying Flights as a status metric in 2027, leaving Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) as the deciding factor. Members must still take at least four United or United Express flights annually, with partner flights excluded from that minimum.

Silver will require 6K PQP, Gold 12K, and Platinum 18K. Those thresholds haven't changed from the existing points-only qualification route.

Premier 1K is where the increase bites. The top tier will require 32K PQP, up from 28K. Travelers who previously qualified with 60 flights and 22K PQP face a roughly 45% increase in the points requirement.

What that means for your wallet

United generally awards one PQP per dollar in eligible airfare spending. Without the flight-count alternative, earning Premier 1K through United airfare alone could require around $32K in qualifying purchases.

Credit cards offer another route, although the spending requirements are substantial. The United Club Card earns one PQP per $15 spent, meaning reaching 32K PQP exclusively through card purchases would take approximately $480K in spending.

That's a higher spending requirement than comparable top tiers at competing airlines. Delta Diamond Medallion requires $28K in qualifying airfare spending or $280K in eligible card purchases, while American Executive Platinum requires approximately $18.18K in airfare or $200K in card spending.

Which United cards can help

The United Explorer Card earns one PQP per $20 spent, capped at 1K annually. Its annual fee is $0 for the first year, then $150.

The United Quest Card offers the same earning rate but raises the annual cap to 18K PQP for a $350 fee. The United Club Card earns one PQP per $15, and its annual cap increases from 28K to 32K PQP, matching the new Premier 1K threshold. Its annual fee is $695.

There's another benefit worth checking before year-end. Eligible United cardholders who qualify for 2027 status receive a PQP deposit equal to 5% of their tier's requirement.

That translates to 300 PQP for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum, and 1.6K for Premier 1K. Previously available to all elite members, the deposit will now be restricted to eligible cardholders.

What to do before December 31

If you're considering a United credit card, Dec. 31, 2026 is the deadline to open an eligible account and qualify for the 2027 PQP deposit. However, the additional points alone shouldn't justify paying an annual fee if you won't use the card's other benefits.

Nothing changes for status qualification during 2026. Partner flights can also contribute PQP, although earnings depend on how tickets are booked. United-issued tickets beginning with 016 generally earn more than eligible partner-issued bookings.

Status earned during 2027 remains valid through the end of 2028. United has also introduced dynamic pricing for PlusPoints upgrades, adding another consideration for frequent flyers.

For travelers unlikely to reach 32K PQP, Platinum may be the more attainable target. Its 18K-point threshold remains unchanged, and the Quest Card's annual earning cap matches that requirement, although four qualifying United flights are still necessary.

Before spending more to chase status, compare the value of upgrades, baggage allowances, and other benefits against what you'd actually pay to qualify. Elite perks are only worth pursuing if the savings justify the additional cost.
