Sonos’ Bungled App Launch Has Spawned Layoffs, Cost Millions, and Jeopardized Its Standing With Audio Enthusiasts

Sonos’ mission is to “Help the world listen better.” That seems to be the last thing it’s doing with the disastrous launch of its latest app. The consumer tech brand has spent years winning over audio nerds with its sophisticated multi-room home audio system, cementing itself as a formidable challenger to competitors like Sony and Audio-Technica. However, the recent app rollout has created significant issues — and it’s because one of its most important features is sounding off-pitch.
Doesn’t sound good: Sonos ($SONO) anticipated 2024 to be a golden year, but it turns out that its software team had another thing coming. After years of insistence from its chief executives, Sonos shipped its next-gen app in May to update the aging control center for its whole-home audio products. Instead, the milestone upgrade was rushed and bungled — creating a “headwind to existing product sales,” according to Sonos CEO Patrick Spence.
Before the poorly executed app debut, Sonos was riding high on anticipation around several next-gen products — including the $449 Sonos Ace headphones and updated speakers that capitalize on the technology gained from their $100M Mayht acquisition. Now, that’ll have to wait.
Unforced error: Amid the turmoil, Sonos has laid off 100 employees, or 6% of its workforce, following a 7% reduction in Jun. 2022. The company cited the need to remain efficient as it executes its products — but what makes the matter more embarrassing is that this unforced error could have been completely avoided. However, if the stock decline continues, it might make Sonos a takeout target for competitors.
