The Quantum Boom’s Payoff Is Years Away. Corporate America Is Already Going All In

America’s quantum race is starting years before the technology reaches the finish line. Enterprise quantum spending has overtaken governments and research labs for the first time. Companies are positioning early for a market that could reach $1T by the late 2030s, with competitive advantage and encryption security on the line.

Quantum FOMO: Enterprise quantum spending hit $300M in 2025, marking the first year businesses collectively outspent research institutions and governments on the technology. A Boston Consulting Group survey of 275 top global companies found 62% were spending at least $1M annually on quantum and had a dedicated program. Companies share a familiar fear of getting caught flat-footed, as many did when AI took off.

  • Allstate has a 10-person quantum team exploring how the technology could price complex insurance policies more precisely, with plans to expand the team this year.
  • HSBC and IBM demonstrated a quantum use case that improved predictions of whether bond trades would be completed by up to 34% versus classical methods.

The Payoff Clock

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna expects quantum to have a measurable impact on earnings by 2028 or 2029, with the industry potentially creating $1T in value by the late 2030s. IBM is already seeing signs of progress, including research with Algorithmiq showing quantum advantages on specific problems. It also secured a $1B CHIPS Act grant for a quantum chip foundry, matched by $1B of its own capital.

  • The Commerce Department awarded $2B across nine quantum companies, including IBM, GlobalFoundries, D-Wave, Rigetti, and Infleqtion.
  • Smaller pure plays are still burning cash but building sizable war chests, with Horizon Quantum and Xanadu holding $113.3M and $312.8M, respectively.

Playing it safe: For retail investors, the Defiance Quantum ETF offers a broader way into the trade. It’s up 36.6% year to date and 63.4% over the past year, mixing established names like IBM and Nvidia with smaller quantum players. But commercial adoption at scale is still likely years away for most technologies, making patience just as important as conviction.
