PayPal is giving debit cardholders 5% cash back in one spending category they pick each month, on up to $1K of purchases. The selection isn't automatic, so anyone who forgets to choose earns nothing extra that month.
Categories have included grocery, dining, gas, clothing, and health and beauty, with tech appearing in some months. The feature started as invitation-only and is now open to eligible US PayPal users, with no credit check since the card draws on a PayPal balance.
The rewards now stay inside PayPal
Since Aug. 1, 2026, rewards can't be transferred to a bank account or a PayPal cash balance, and the only ways to use them are PayPal checkout or gift cards. Honey, PayPal's coupon extension, falls under the same rules, and points can expire if an account goes inactive or PayPal revises its terms.
The bonus math didn't change. Maxing the $1K cap every month yields $50, or $600 a year, now paid as credit that only spends inside PayPal.

Fees and who the card fits
The account has no monthly fee or minimum balance, and NerdWallet scores it 4.4 out of 5 overall, with a weaker 3.1 on overdraft policies. Withdrawals are free up to $400 a day at MoneyPass ATMs, purchases abroad carry a 2.5% fee, and overdrafts aren't allowed, so a purchase that would push the balance below zero gets declined.
That makes the card most useful for people who can't qualify for a rewards credit card and already spend through PayPal. Rivals including SoFi pay interest on balances and offer sign-up bonuses, which this card doesn't.
Why PayPal is pushing debit
Financial services made up more than 20% of PayPal's transaction margin dollars in 2026 and grew at a double-digit rate, CEO Enrique Lores said on the third-quarter call. Venmo's debit card reached 6.7M monthly active accounts, up more than 55% from a year earlier, while branded checkout growth stayed around 1% to 2% for a fourth straight quarter.
Finance chief Jamie Miller has described a three-year recovery horizon for checkout, and rewards that can only be spent at PayPal checkout send that spending straight back to it.
