Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Warns of AI Overbuild, Teasing Possible Pullback In the Tech Giant’s Spend

Artificial intelligence (AI) has a lot of naysayers and enemies, but its latest doubter might surprise you — Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. But don’t worry, it’s not what you think. Last week, the chief of one of America’s AI first-movers made a podcast appearance to promote a talk shop about the burgeoning AI industry. And buried within that 30-minute conversation was plenty of fiery, cautious language about the business’ costs, expectations, and future.
Satya says: The comments from Nadella come weeks after publicly traded tech giants announced that they would cumulatively spend $320B on capital expenditures this year to size up their AI operations. They also come amid a public rift between Microsoft and OpenAI, which counts Microsoft as one of its first investors. Some of the comments, such as the ones about AGI, might be a vague shot across the bow of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Who cares? Since 2019, OpenAI has become a significant spender on Microsoft’s Azure cloud, but as the firm increasingly sympathizes with competitor Oracle, Microsoft is reportedly walking back some of its big AI spending. Analysts at TD Cowen even claim the company is canceling leases and adopting a “wait and see” approach to the boom. Nadella even says in the podcast he’ll be happy to lease from everybody (presumably for cheaper) on the other side.
