What ETFs have stood the test of time and beaten the S&P 500? Here’s a list. The S&P 500 had a 157% return over the same time period.
No surprise here. Tech ETFs top the list.
But getting there hasn’t been easy. The top three are down roughly 27-40% from their peaks. In bull markets, they tend to outperform the S&P 500 while doing worse in bear markets.
Some major categories are missing here…
- Crypto/blockchain ETFs were only launched in recent years.
- Clean energy (i.e., solar, wind) had terrible returns in their early years.
- The iShares Biotechnology ETF (NASDAQ:IBB) would’ve been up there if it wasn’t for the 29% decline from peak 2021.
Can’t enjoy the highs without the lows.
