The merger is now doing the heavy lifting
Average portfolio loans and leases of $179B increased 1% sequentially and 45% YoY.
Average deposits reached $238B, up 3% from the prior quarter. Core deposits rose 3% sequentially to $236B.
Net interest income, the gap between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits, grew 3% sequentially to $2.28B. Analysts had modeled $2.28B against a reported $2.27B, and net interest margin landed at 3.3% versus the 3.4% expected.
Adjusted noninterest expense declined 2% to $1.82B, a sign the integration isn't inflating the cost base.
"Fifth Third's third quarter reflected the earnings power of the combined company."
Tim Spence, Fifth Third Bancorp
Credit and capital held steady
Net charge-offs, the share of loans the bank wrote off as uncollectible, stayed at 0.31%.
The common equity tier 1 ratio, a measure of the capital cushion regulators watch, rose to 10.02%.
Tangible book value per share of $22.01 missed the $23.35 analysts expected, the clearest soft spot in the release alongside revenue.
The quarter leaves Fifth Third a bigger bank with steady credit, a thinner margin than forecast, and a book value that hasn't caught up to the deal yet.
