James Talarico Cancels Texas Events After Flu Diagnosis Amid Outreach Backlash
Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico canceled a Central Texas African American Civic Engagement Symposium event and an Austin fundraiser after being diagnosed with the flu at a Dallas urgent care facility.
Talarico previously shifted his September 30 appearance with the United States Hispanic Business Council to a virtual format due to the illness, preventing him from attending the Rio Grande Valley event in person.
The campaign interruptions follow criticism from black Democrats and activists, including Texas state Representative Jolanda Jones, who warned over the summer that Talarico risked losing by failing to adequately engage black voters and infrastructure.
Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft criticized Talarico's outreach efforts as mediocre, while Republican opponent and Attorney General Ken Paxton's campaign accused Talarico of prioritizing out-of-state fundraisers in New York over Texas voters.
Early voting for the November 3 election begins on October 19, with Talarico scheduled to participate in a CNN town hall on October 14 as he faces Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
