Box Office Surges 10.7% As The Odyssey Powers Theater Comeback

Odysseus wandered for ten years to find his way home, but Christopher Nolan needed only one weekend to conquer the box office. His mythic adaptation of Homer’s epic delivered Nolan’s best global opening since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, adding fuel to a box office already running 10.7% higher than last year. Several millennia later, The Odyssey still knows how to work a room.
- The film opened to $264M globally against a $250M production budget — with another $125M in marketing spend to recoup before Universal sees pure profit.
- Industrywide, the domestic box office reached $2.99B in Q2, putting Hollywood on pace for its first $10B year since the pandemic.
Premium pays off: Bigger screens are turning into bigger profits. The Odyssey’s IMAX push hit $51.8M globally, with premium formats driving more than half of AMC’s opening weekend receipts. That momentum showed up in AMC’s earnings too, with record Q2 revenue of $1.59B — up 14% year over year as global attendance grew by double digits. Still, the real box office test begins once the summer slate ends.
