The Global Airline Industry Is On Track to Achieve a Record $1T Revenue in 2025

It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s the airline industry soaring past turbulence into success. After pandemic losses totaling $187B between 2020 and 2022, carriers are now set to surpass $1T in global revenue in 2025, according to the International Air Travel Association (IATA). This milestone comes as the industry anticipates welcoming 5.2B passengers next year, marking an all-time high in air travel demand.
- The industry forecasts $36.6B in net income for 2025, representing a 16% jump from 2024, though profit margins remain thin at 3.6%.
- Per-passenger profit is projected to rise to $7 in 2025, a dramatic improvement from $2.25 just 18 months ago — while US airlines are expected to make $12 per passenger.
Stormy skies ahead: While pent-up travel demand has fueled the industry’s ascent, factors like supply chain disruptions, conflicts rerouting flights, and political headwinds all pose significant challenges. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has forced costly detours, further squeezing margins. IATA’s chief, Willie Walsh, has also expressed concerns about the future of sustainable aviation fuel incentives, stating, “There is a risk that the benefits that the industry witnessed under the Biden administration may not continue under the Trump administration.”
