Store Shutdowns Surge to 15K as Retail Giants Face Survival Test

As retail’s game of musical chairs intensifies, some players are finding themselves without a seat. The brick-and-mortar landscape faces its most significant reshuffling since the pandemic, with Coresight Research projecting 15K store closures in 2025 — more than double the 7.3K locations shuttered in 2024. This reflects an increasingly winner-takes-all market where retail goliaths like Walmart and Costco continue gaining ground while others struggle to keep their doors open.
- Party City leads the shutdown parade with 700 stores going dark, followed by Big Lots at 300 closures, while Macy’s continues its planned 150-store reduction through 2027.
- Shein and Temu collectively generated ~$100B in sales last year, with their competitive pricing and convenience stealing market share from traditional retailers.
Retail’s second wind: Despite the doom and gloom, 2024 actually saw ~6K store openings — the highest number since Coresight began tracking in 2012. Value-focused retailers like Aldi and Five Below continue expanding their footprints, suggesting that while the retail landscape is transforming, it’s not disappearing. Coresight’s Deborah Weinswig noted, “Retailers need to embrace technologies like artificial intelligence to deliver a better customer experience and to optimize pricing to remain relevant and avoid ongoing closures.”
