Take-Two Interactive Software shares rose on Friday after a 26-minute GTA 6 gameplay preview debuted exclusively on Netflix and overwhelmed both platforms with viewer demand.
The preview aired Thursday and briefly crashed Netflix, forcing some members to refresh before the company restored service. Game streaming platform Twitch also experienced bandwidth issues when the trailer dropped, according to Wells Fargo analysts.
Netflix moved fast to capitalize on the moment. The preview hit No. 1 on the streamer's top-10 movie list, listed as a film rather than a TV episode.
Analytics firm Sensor Tower found that mobile usage jumped 50% and web visitors surged 125% compared to Netflix's typical Thursday audience. The preview moved to YouTube six hours later and had 6.7M views by Thursday morning.
The financial stakes are significant. Analytics firm Newzoo estimates global preorders have already reached $260M, with sales potentially hitting $4.5B by launch week. GTA 6 is set to release Nov. 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, 13 years after GTA 5.
Morgan Stanley analyst Matt Cost said investor excitement over the game should push Take-Two's share price higher. In an analysis of four prior major game launches, publisher stocks gained an average of 13% in the final three months before release.
JPMorgan analyst Bryan Smilek reiterated an Overweight rating with a December 2027 price target of $310.
Wells Fargo offered a more measured view. Analysts there said Take-Two also needs positive news on the upcoming GTA Online update to sustain a meaningful re-rating higher, and noted downside risks if sales disappoint or the launch slips again.
Scale sets GTA 6 apart from its predecessor
The game is built to a scale that dwarfs its predecessor. Vice City, GTA 6's Miami-inspired setting, is twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos, and the full map is three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area. The game features over 600K animations, compared with 55K in GTA 5.
"GTA has an opening decade."
Geoff Keighley, The Game Awards
GTA 5, released in 2013, has sold 230M copies and still ranks in the top five bestselling games every year. That legacy gives GTA 6 a commercial floor that few entertainment launches can match.
The trailer's reception also appears to have blunted the damage from a difficult week of leaks. Rockstar had called those leaks heartbreaking, but analyst reaction and viewer sentiment suggest the controversy won't dent launch-week sales.
Console hardware remains a headwind. US console hardware sales fell to $282M in July, the lowest since the pandemic, and a standard Xbox Series X now retails at $800. But analysts say GTA 6 may be exactly the catalyst a struggling console market needs.
