Citi Gauges Interest in a $600-Plus Premium Business Card

Citi surveyed some business customers about a credit card carrying an annual fee above $600 and benefits advertised at more than $2K, Upgraded Points reported on Oct. 22, crediting Doctor of Credit with first spotting it.

The listed perks include travel rewards, airport lounge access, a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck statement credit, and automatic or accelerated status with airline, hotel, and rental car programs. The survey also floated expense management tools.

Citi hasn't confirmed a launch, final pricing, or any specific benefit. It could carry Citi’s own brand or launch as a premium American Airlines AAdvantage card.

Citi trails three rivals in premium business cards

American Express charges $895 for the Business Platinum, JPMorgan Chase charges $795 for the Sapphire Reserve for Business, and Capital One charges $395 for the Venture X Business plus a $300 annual travel credit.

Citi's premium consumer card, the Strata Elite, sits at $595 with a $300 hotel benefit, a $200 Splurge credit, Priority Pass lounge access, and four Admirals Club passes a year.

Its business lineup is thinner. The Citi/AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard earns 2 miles per dollar on American Airlines, car rentals, gas, and telecom, 1 mile elsewhere, and unlocks a companion certificate after $30K of annual spend.

Chase set the bar for the category it covers best, with uncapped 3x points on advertising spend plus credits of $300 for travel, $400 for ZipRecruiter, and $200 for Google Workspace.

The AAdvantage economics behind the move

Citi and American Airlines restructured their cobrand deal into something closer to a joint venture, with exclusivity and ThankYou point transfers attached.

American wants annual cash payments from its card and loyalty partners to approach $10B, which a December 2024 filing tied to roughly $1.5B more annual pretax income than 2024.

Second-quarter cash from credit card and other partners hit $1.8B, up from $1.4B a year earlier, while cobrand spending grew 8%.

On Citi's Oct. 13 earnings call, US Consumer Cards revenue was flat, with net interest revenue up 6% and noninterest revenue down 62% on partner payment accruals and rewards costs. General purpose card spending rose 13%.

The pair already lean on business spend. American extended a promotion letting select Citi AAdvantage business cardmembers earn Loyalty Points on employee card spending through Dec. 31, 2028, a two-year extension matching 1 point to the primary for every 1 an authorized user earns.

A survey sets no date and commits Citi to nothing. For business owners weighing a fee this size, the credits only count if they replace spending already on the books.
