Amtrak Achieves Milestone With 32.8M Passengers, Eyes Further Expansion

Has America’s railway renaissance gained momentum with increased interest in scenic and leisurely train travel? Amtrak’s recent report says yes. The company reached unprecedented ridership levels, carrying 32.8M passengers in fiscal year 2024 (from Oct. 1, 2023, to Sep. 30, 2024) — a 15% surge from the previous year’s 28.6M. This milestone comes as the rail service embarks on its most ambitious infrastructure overhaul yet, backed by $4.5B in company investments and an additional $10B in federal grants.
- The company aims to double ridership to 66M annual passengers by 2040, reflecting growing confidence in Americans’ growing appetite for rail travel.
- The carrier is also modernizing its fleet, upgrading stations, and replacing the 151-year-old Baltimore and Potomac Tunnel to ease DC-New Jersey congestion.
Looking down the track: Amtrak’s expansion blueprint includes doubling Chicago to Saint Paul routes, introducing new Cascades trips in the Northwest, and launching high-speed rail in Texas and more Northeast routes. The company is also focusing on passenger satisfaction with flexible fare options, enhanced dining, and better booking choices for budget-conscious travelers. However, financial recovery remains a priority, with CEO Stephen Gardner expecting the company to reach break-even status in five years after pandemic-related losses.
