Amneal Pharmaceuticals Is Booming By Making Drugs That Nobody Wants to Make — Generics

While most pharma companies chase new indications and rare diseases, Amneal Pharmaceuticals is quietly making a fortune by doing the opposite — sticking with what already works. The generic drugmaker has seen its stock surge 64% over the past year by focusing on making existing medications more affordable and accessible. While their current strategy has yielded results, they’re now pivoting to even more inventive methods to grow their business.
Dose of innovation: Amneal’s strategy of focusing on generics has paid in spades, with the firm’s revenue jumping 17% year-over-year in the latest quarter, accompanied by a 12% rise in EBITDA. But they are not resting on their laurels. Recognizing the critical needs within the pharmaceutical sector, Amneal has identified 232 medications on FDA shortage lists and positioned itself as a key player in addressing these gaps. As the fourth-largest domestic producer of retail generics, they’re well-positioned to make a big impact. Executive VP and Chief Commercial Officer Andy Boyer noted, “Our ability to execute and continuously launch complex products is expanding our portfolio of affordable medicines … driving sustainable growth.”
While Amneal’s profits remain limited due to ongoing investments in R&D and sales expansion, its focus is firmly on long-term growth. The company has reduced debt and broadened its portfolio, moving beyond basic generics and into more advanced biologics and long-acting formulations. Targeting conditions like Alzheimer’s and cancer, the firm’s efforts are already paying off, with Amneal forecasting 2025 revenue of $3.1B — surpassing the $2.9B market estimate. This strategic push into complex therapies is having a tangible impact:
The road ahead looks promising: Amneal’s strong execution and promising product launches have caught the attention of analysts, with JP Morgan and Piper Sandler raising their price targets to $12 and $11, respectively. As of Feb. 2025, the business boasts 76 products pending approval and is strategically optimizing its R&D portfolio, focusing on diversifying beyond non-oral solids and expanding its injectable offerings. With these initiatives paving the way, Amneal is positioning itself for a promising future in the pharmaceutical industry, targeting a robust 7-11% growth in 2025.
