Amazon Has Removed 95% of The Plastic Air Pillows Used In Its North American Delivery Packaging

Amazon’s new packaging is helping them pop their plastic problem. The company announced that it has successfully replaced 95% of all plastic air pillows with environmentally friendlier paper fillers from its packaging in North America — and plans to be completely free of air pillows by the year-end. This change is part of a larger commitment to reduce waste and increase recycling while also ensuring your latest splurge arrives undamaged.
- In 2022, Amazon used 86K metric tons of single-use plastic — down 11.6% from 2021.
- With this new change, they aim to eliminate approximately 15B plastic air pillows annually.
The plastic escape: Despite Amazon’s global efforts to reduce plastic packaging, the situation in the US paints a different picture. According to the nonprofit Oceana, in 2022 plastic waste in the US was up 10%. However, Amazon is attempting to address this issue by aiming for nearly all Prime Day deliveries to be plastic-free next month while actively increasing efforts to ship packages without extra packaging.
