Video Game Development Costs Crater as 87% of Studios Embrace AI Animation Tools

Game developers are trading animation budgets for algorithms thanks to AI’s helping hand. Across the industry, studios are finding that tools are now mature enough to handle serious development tasks — with 87% of developers already using AI to cut costs. Video-generation tech from GoogleGOOGL, MiniMax, and Kling can now produce a 20-minute sequence for about $1.5K — down from the $2M price tag it carried just a few years ago.
- Square EnixSQNXF, maker of Final Fantasy, has backed Vienna-based startup Atlas, which uses generative AI to automatically create game assets.
- Decart’s Dean Lietersdorf believes costs must fall below $0.10 per hour of high-quality video generation before studios can offer fully AI-developed games on subscription models.
Leveling up: Lietersdorf predicted, “The entire gaming industry will change when there’s a single game that’s completely AI developed … I think we’ll probably see that in the next three to six months.” Falling costs are already pushing developers to automate core tasks like asset design and world-building. While human creativity still dominates voice acting, music, and editing, the savings from animation are compelling enough that some studios now insist on working only with AI-ready partners.
