The 800+ page “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is full of twists and turns, but inside the hefty Republican tax and budget bill are some quirks worth highlighting — especially since they might pay you a visit on your tax return come April.
- Increased senior deduction: The OBBB couldn’t make “No Tax on Social Security” a reality, but Americans over the age of 65 can look forward to a bonus deduction worth at least $7.6K from 2025 to 2028.
- New charitable donation deduction: Historically, to write off charitable donations, one would have to itemize — the bill now allows single filers to deduct up to $1K in donations above-the-line.
- No tax on tips or overtime pay: The OBBB carved out $25K in tip deductions and $12.5K in overtime pay deductions on taxes through 2028, which could benefit lower-income Americans.
- Child tax credits: The OBBB doesn’t just increase the child tax credit (CTC) to $2.2K, but introduces a new $1K credit to savings accounts for children born between 2025 and 2028.
Itemizing is so back: Despite the OBBB raising the standard deduction to $15,750 for tax year 2025, Americans will have fresh incentives to itemize — particularly if they want to take advantage of the higher SALT deduction (up to $40K) or finance a new US-made car ($10K auto loan deduction).
